Korean studio Showbox has secured distribution deals across more than 20 international territories for colonythe exciting new zombie movie from Train to Busan Director Yeon Sang-ho made the announcement on Tuesday ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.
Action Thriller – Yeun returns to the zombie genre that he helped reinvent globally with his 2016 smash hit Train to Busan – It went to Well Go USA in North America, StudioCanal in the UK, Gaga Company in Japan, ARP Sélection in France, and Plaion Pictures in Germany and Italy. Showbox has also closed deals for Australia & New Zealand (K-Movie Entertainment UK), Latin America (BF Distribution), Scandinavia (Mis Label), Spain (Energia), CIS and Baltics (The World Pictures), Poland (Media4Fun), Turkey (Mars), Hong Kong (Edko Films), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Indonesia (PT Primacinema Multimedia), and the Philippines (Pioneer Films), India (Multimedia), and Thailand. Yoon co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator Choi Gyu-seok. The film is produced by Wowpoint and Smilegate in association with Midnight Studio, with Showbox presenting. The reported production budget is about $12 million, which is modest by Hollywood standards but high for a Korean film.
Yeun made his debut as an animator, with Dark Symbols King of pigs (2011) and The fake one (2013), before making the leap into live action in 2016 — the year Train to Busan It premiered alongside its accompanying animated film Seoul station. He followed it with a live-action sequel peninsula (2020), was released during the pandemic, before shifting to a streaming series. Netflix supernatural series Hell It debuted in November 2021 and rose to the top spot globally on the streaming service within a day of its launch. He has released many series and projects since then.
