Kate Connor and Taika Waititi to voice ‘Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory’ cartoon, first look drops on Netflix

Kate Connor and Taika Waititi are set to voice an animated twist on a Roald Dahl classic for Netflix.

Charlie vs. Chocolate Factorycoming in 2027, will star Heart stopper Breakout as an all-new character of Charlie Paley Jojo rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok Director Waititi voices Willy Wonka.

The New Zealand director is also an executive producer of the film. Jared Stern and Ellen Bogan direct the Netflix Animation Studio Original, in association with Sony Pictures Imageworks.

Its events take place in contemporary London, Charlie vs. Chocolate Factory It is said to retain “the quintessential British charm synonymous with that of Roald Dahl”. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Featuring a new adventure, original songs, all-new characters, and some surprise returns.

The film follows Wonka (Waititi), who spent the years following the Golden Ticket contest behind bars — not the chocolate kind — for the crime of turning a child into berries. “Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world,” the plot synopsis reads. “But there’s one thing standing in their way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of ‘bad’ kids plan to storm the factory, take over Wonka’s priceless bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who have entered the factory’s fantasy world, these kids will bite off a little bit more than they can chew.”

It’s a fun representation of the London I know. This new adventure will surprise audiences around the world, you’re waiting for it!”

Waititi praised the work of Stern and Bogan. “[They] I have a bold vision worthy of this new adventure while remaining sympathetic to the legacy, and I am thrilled to play my part in bringing Willy Wonka to life in animated form.” He’s a very special person to me, and the opportunity to express such a geeky candy bar – albeit a bit mischievous at times – is very exciting.

Hannah Minghella, Head of Animation and Family Films at Netflix Animation Studios, added: “With their unique comedic and visual flair, Jared and Elaine have created an exhilarating adventure that stays true to the spirit of Dahl’s beloved novel while imagining an all-new story that introduces this world to a new generation. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to experience the magic and mayhem for themselves when the film is released next year.”
