On Tuesday night, Academy members gathered in Fox Arena for a special evening with FYC Hollywood Reporter To celebrate the first season of the Fox series The best medicine.

The drama, which has already been renewed for a second season, is based on the hit British show Dr. Martin. The American film adaptation stars Josh Charles as Dr. Martin Best as he leaves a prominent hospital to pursue private practice in the quaint and quaint fishing town of Port Wayne, where he spent his childhood summers with his Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts). Guests enjoyed a screening of Episode 9 followed by a cast and creator Q&A with Charles, Boots, Abigail Spencer, Josh Segarra, Cree, Ben Silverman, Liz Tuccillo, and Rodney Ferrell.

As is the case with the show, the chat was a mixture of laughter and sincere, sincere emotions. To start, the group answered who would actually go to Doc Martin for treatment. While there were some yes answers, model Liz Tuccillo prefers a doctor with a bedside manner. “I like a little bit of comfort with my doctor,” she said, a stark difference from Charles’s serious personality.

Executive producer Ben Silverman revealed why he wanted to adapt the popular British show, noting, “Traveling the world and looking for the best ideas in the world, there are a lot of ideas that don’t exist. And that’s the basic material for Dr. Martin Really connected to me and my family were fans of the show. I worked with Mark Crowdy years ago on a movie called Saving graceAbout 25 years ago, he was watching the show and saw his name; He said: “I immediately approached him and thought it would work perfectly in the States, but it took amazing talent to adapt it and make it American. You want to start with the best, and so it was great to start with this material.”

Charles signed on because he was looking for a comedy project after a string of dramatic roles, most recently The Handmaid’s Tale. But he admitted he didn’t quite know what he was signing up for. “For some reason, I wasn’t aware of the original show, which I now realize is a global phenomenon, but I had never watched it before. So, I started watching it when they sent me,” the star explained. Between reading Tuccillo’s first two scripts and watching “a handful” of the original series, Charles said he was “absolutely fascinated by it.”

Potts joked that being selected was a simple process because she is part of a small group. “I’m in a very small group of people at an age who can still remember lines,” Potts quipped, “There’s only three of us, okay? And of the three of us who are still working, I think I fit the bill more easily. So, I said yes.” “Anyway, it’s a great cast because I’m old [it’s] “It’s an escape for me, and I’m a workaholic,” she added, also reassuring the audience that she never plans to retire.

Throughout the evening, the cast and EPs talked about how special the show was to them, while also praising its wholesome, comforting warmth. Each panelist was asked about their favorite moments from season one. Segarra shared that his highlight was the wedding ring. Spencer echoed his sentiments, then fought back tears as she revealed a personal struggle while filming the first season.

“I’m a little surprised that I’m going to say this, but I was going through a pretty big crisis while filming. You never know what’s going to happen when you’re going through a personal crisis, because you can make a show about a family, you can make a show about a community, but it’s hard to make a show,” Spencer said. “The working hours and the way our business is structured doesn’t leave much room for personal life, to be quite honest. It’s a way of life. And I was going through a really big family crisis, and the way everyone here rallied around me.”

About two-thirds into the Q&A session, the audience was greeted by a surprise cast member who arrived at the panel. Watson, the Cromforder who plays Copernicus, walked out (in a tuxedo) with his coach to cheers and applause from the audience. While he was initially excited, he laid down next to Ferrell’s chair for the rest of the panel, stealing the show.

After the Q&A, guests took to the lawn for a reception that combined Port Wenn’s small-town charm with Cinco de Mayo celebrations. There were New England touches, with a lobster photo station, while traditional Mexican serapes topped the tables.
