Janhvi Kapoor may often appear calm and cheerful in public, but she has now revealed that the period following her debut film Dhadak was more emotionally turbulent than it seemed.Speaking on the Raj Chamani podcast, Janhvi revisited her state of mind around the film’s release in 2018. Despite the film’s commercial success and positive feedback, she said her personal experience was characterized by self-doubt and emotional turmoil.“You know, every time anyone talks to me about my first film, Dhadak, they say, ‘She was so good in it’ or ‘We loved Dhadak’ and ‘I made a lot of money’… But my memory of Dhadak was completely different.

I felt depressed after Dhadak. I thought this is gaya and this is hogaya (I’m done). “People hate me,” she shared.Janhvi went on to explain how the loss of her mother, legendary actress Sridevi, deeply affected her during that phase. Sridevi passed away just months before Dhadak hit theaters, leaving Janhvi to grapple with grief as she stepped into the limelight.“I’ve gotten all the validation in my life from my mom. She’s gone.

So I said, okay, I’m going to take that to the audience. “I was expecting some universal acceptance, which I didn’t know didn’t exist,” she said.

Reflecting on her mindset at the time, the actress admitted that she focused her attention only on criticism, ignoring the film’s success. “I was just focusing on the negative side. I didn’t focus on or even acknowledge the fact that it was a very successful film… I think it was the most commercially successful film with newcomers until Saiyaara. It didn’t even click as a hit. I just knew that I was bad and that people hated me… Because I only looked at the negative side, and that became my reality.”

Directed by Shashank Khaitan and backed by Karan Johar, Dhadak also starred Ishaan Khatter and was the official Hindi remake of the Marathi blockbuster Seerat.
