Jake Reiner, the son of slain Hollywood director Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, paid an emotional tribute to his parents in a lengthy letter on Friday. In an Instagram post, he expressed his feelings about dealing with grief since losing his parents on December 14, after they were stabbed to death by their son, Nick Rayner.Jake’s post, sharing his story of hearing the news of his parents’ deaths, comes nearly four months after the horrific murder case rocked Hollywood. He explained that he was only talking about himself and that his sister Romy would be sharing her story, and wrote a caption that read: “A week from today, I will be approaching my first birthday without my father. I consider myself lucky to have had you by my side for the past 34 years.”
“In the past four months, I’ve learned a lot about grief.”
He shared an old photo of his parents and recalled the day he received the news of his parents’ death. In a post titled “On the Afternoon of December 14,” he revealed that he was at Union Station when he received a call from his sister. He wrote: “I received a call from my sister Romi telling me that our father had died. Minutes later, she called me to tell me that our mother had also died.”
Sharing his story, he wrote a note that said, “So many things were stolen from me that day. My parents will not attend my wedding, they will not be able to hold their future grandchild, and they will not be able to see me have the successful career I still strive for. It breaks my heart and makes me angry at the same time.”Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to instantly lose both parents at the same time. It is too devastating to comprehend.
I still wake up every morning convincing myself that this isn’t a dream. This is truly the nightmare of my life.I can’t even put myself in my parents’ shoes, but one thing I keep coming back to is how scared they are. They were the last people in the world who deserved what happened to them. They deserve love, they deserve respect, and above all, they deserve appreciation for what they have done for all of us and the world. For me, my parents are the center of my life. They are my guiding lights, the foundation of my identity as a human being, and the most caring people I have ever known.A lot of people don’t have the luxury of having the best parents, the best mom, or the best dad, but I did. The love you have for me, my brother, and my sister is truly unconditional. And the love they have for each other in their marriage is something I’ve always looked to as a benchmark for what a successful relationship looks like.
