A Very Wise Man – Noah Cross’ character ChinatownSpecifically – it was once said: “Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores, they all become respectable if they stick around long enough.” The same can be said about donkey franchise, which somehow garnered more critical acclaim the longer it ran. But everything ends, and so it is with this series that has lasted more than a quarter of a century and reaches its supposed end with… Ass: better and last.

Featuring scenes of dangerous stunts performed by grown men (and a couple of women), the series has been celebrated for its portrait of friendship and camaraderie. Because of the joyful glee with which the participants abuse themselves and each other. For the chaotic, almost surreal nature of the parts makes legendary cinematic daredevils from Buster Keaton to Jackie Chan look like cowards.

Donkey: the best and the last

Bottom line If you can read this, you’re too smart for this movie.

He slanders: Johnny Knoxville, Steve O, Chris Pontius, Jason “Wee Man” Acuna, Dave England, Danger Ehren, Preston Lacey, Rachel Wolfson, Jasper Dolphin, Zach Holmes
exit: Jeff Tremayne
Rated R, 1 hour 32 minutes

If you can appreciate movies for these qualities, or find them hysterically funny, that’s fine. But really, let’s stop pretending they’re anything but stupid. Master Jackass Johnny Knoxville is certainly an engaging performer (and a decent actor, as he’s proven many times over). And some of his motley crew show a healthy awareness of the sheer stupidity of what they’re doing.

But while there are occasional funny moments, these films are emblematic of neglect in America. (But this is not stupidity on the part of their creators, because the first five films in the series have grossed approximately $560 million worldwide.) Instead of sending musical selections or welcome messages in different languages to outer space, we should send these films. It will ensure that the aliens find the planet not worth conquering.

This latest installment is a great piece of video, with more than half its runtime consisting of highlights, or more accurately, from the MTV TV series and subsequent films. So, if you’re nostalgic about seeing Steve-O once again potty-tied and suspended in the air to be covered in feces, you’re in luck.

There’s also never-before-seen footage, including the stunt that started it all – Knoxville wearing a Kevlar vest and shooting himself point-blank in the chest. It only takes six tries for the bullet to come out. Another never-before-seen stunt shows him sealed in a cardboard box that was thrown down the stairs. This was never broadcast because it was easy to imitate. Of course, there have been numerous cases over the years where children and teens have been injured trying to recreate the most elaborate stunts.

Another old segment, which MTV also refused to air, involves Knoxville, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and in handcuffs, entering a hardware store and asking for a saw. In the resulting police actions, the officer nearly lost control of her patrol car.

Knoxville, who chokes more than once on screen at the prospect of his cash cow, sorry, labor of love, ending up, explains that he’s too old to suffer the kind of physical abuse he did. And you kind of believe him, especially when you see the footage from 2022 Jackass ForevHe suffered a severe concussion, a brain hemorrhage, and several broken bones in an ill-advised encounter with a bull.

He’s more observer than participant in the new stunts designed for the film, which include Steve-O receiving a rectal exam from a robot that uses peanut butter as a lubricant. The robot, dubbed IW Larry, is voiced by comedian Adam Ray, who delivers some of the funniest lines.

All of the performers seem to relish the opportunity to be physically abused, although some express remorse here and there. “Fuck this job!” One of them screamed after being shot with a taser while he was hanging in the air like a marionette. Another admitted, as he inserted a toy car into his anus, saying: “I’m really questioning myself now.”

As usual, there are a plethora of disgusting scenes, including a game of Twister for which the participants, wearing transparent plastic pants, prepare by taking heavy-duty laxatives.

Admittedly, there are some moments where the conceptual ideas are actually entertaining, like the classic clip from the series in which the gang pretends to kidnap Brad Pitt while he’s standing in line for a hot dog at Pink’s. And the scene, which depicts a bar fight between short people, interrupted by diminutive policemen and paramedics, looks like it could have been created by Buñuel.

Although the visual quality throughout the film is very low, the eye-catching opening and closing sequences reflect the visual skill of Spike Jonze, who produced the film. The film ends as the series began donkey A crew rides a giant grocery cart, only to be driven to oblivion by the tunes of “My Way.” Of course, the next song we hear is “We’ll Meet Again,” so the odds of this being the final engagement seem slim.
