What does director Leah McKendrick say about her creative vision?
According to IndieWire, director Leah McKendrick discussed her approach. McKendrick revealed, “I’ve learned that it doesn’t serve me to be blindly and endlessly loyal to a script that won’t get produced. I can either die on this hill with that script, or I can make a movie.”McKendrick also explained how the male protagonist falls in love with the female protagonist. “It bears witness to this courage [from Jill]”That authenticity in someone who’s so deeply human, who wouldn’t fall in love?” says McKendrick.McKendrick discussed the film’s underlying theme. “When I first wrote,” McKendrick said [the script]I hadn’t found my person, and so it was about belonging and imagining what it could be like to find true love in romantic love.
“My sister is alive and well, she’s doing well, but really it was inspired by her being my soul mate and wanting to write a love letter to the brothers.”
Voicemail device
Director McKendrick explained why the voicemails were so important to the story. “Voicemail messages cannot be edited or rewritten,” McKendrick said. “They’re usually messy, awkward, unclear, and sometimes confessional. Like a stream of consciousness, always a little off the rails.”
