Director SS Rajamouli’s ambitious adventure film ‘Varanasi’ is back in the headlines due to a widespread rumor regarding its huge budget of Rs 1,400 crore. The film, which is one of the most expensive films ever made in India and stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles, has faced a hurdle related to its production cost, according to industry reports.

Varanasi budget.

While the makers have not officially commented on the film’s budget, a post on Always Bollywood and other entertainment news outlets claimed that current estimates circulating within the industry indicate that the production cost of the project could range between Rs 1,200 crore to Rs 1,400 crore.

OTT hurdle for ‘Varanasi’

According to reports, the film’s original financial plan was developed during a period when the streaming market was booming.

At that time, OTT platforms were spending anywhere between Rs 500 crore to Rs 600 crore to acquire the digital rights for a landmark title of this size. However, industry observers are now noting that the live streaming landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years. Trade sources point out that major OTT platforms are becoming increasingly ‘selective’ with acquisitions and current valuations of even high-profile films may be closer to the Rs 150-crore to Rs 200-crore range.

This has reportedly created new challenges for big-budget productions. As a result, there is speculation that manufacturers are exploring ways to prevent costs from escalating further. According to the report, production schedules are now being changed in favor of more cost-effective alternatives, while maintaining the film’s broad visual appeal.

SS Rajamouli opts for profit sharing?

Reports also claimed that Rajamouli may be willing to take a pay cut if necessary. However, trade analysts point out that the filmmaker’s compensation structure is believed to be tied to profit-sharing arrangements rather than a large upfront fee.It should be noted that these reports are currently unverified.‘Varanasi’, which is currently in production, is scheduled to hit the big screens in April 2027.
