A new film said to be inspired by one of Bollywood’s most widely discussed legal controversies is already making headlines. The upcoming project, titled ‘Kala Hiran: The Battle For Legacy’, is said to be inspired by the 1998 blackbuck poaching case that Salman Khan was involved in during the filming of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’.
With its courtroom drama, political undertones and references to Lawrence Bishnoi’s angle said to form part of the narrative, the film generated controversy long before its release.
What is the theme of “Kala Hiran”?
According to the makers, ‘Kala Hiran: The Battle For Legacy’ revisits the events surrounding the alleged blackbuck poaching incident that took place in Rajasthan nearly three decades ago. The film is expected to explore the ensuing legal battle, the actor’s arrest, the media attention surrounding the case, and the broader public discourse that has emerged over the years. The recently unveiled first poster immediately caught attention online, largely because the lead character bears a remarkable resemblance to Salman Khan. From the design to the bracelet, many details prompted viewers to draw comparisons with the star. The film’s teaser is scheduled to be revealed on June 20, 2026.While the blackbuck issue appears to form the core of the narrative, the makers have hinted that the film will also delve into the tensions associated with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose community considers the blackbuck a sacred animal.
The project is said to blend legal proceedings with dramatic storytelling, showcasing events that unfolded inside and outside the courtroom. It remains to be seen whether the film sticks more closely to the documented events or takes creative liberties.
Who stars in the movie?
The full list of actors has not been revealed yet. However, the first promotional material has already sparked debate due to the physical resemblance between the lead actor and Salman Khan.
Reports indicate that characters inspired by several characters connected to the original case may appear in the film. These are said to include numbers based on individuals who were present during the filming of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ in Rajasthan, including Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam. The identities of the actors portraying these roles have not been officially announced. The film is directed by Bharat S.
Shrinate and is backed by producer Amit Jani, who previously produced the controversial project ‘Udaipur Files’.
Legal controversy before release
Even before the teaser was released, the film found itself at the center of controversy. According to reports, Salman Khan’s legal representatives have allegedly sent a notice to the makers of the film, objecting to the release of the film and requesting that the promotional content be removed from social media platforms.Producer Amit Jani responded to these reports by sharing pictures of what he claimed was a legal notice.
He also posted a strongly worded statement on social media. He wrote in Hindi: “The purpose of the notices is to frighten people so that they succumb to his charms. It is his habit to intimidate. It is my nature not to be afraid. He thinks I am dead. Tell him I am not dead.” So far, Salman Khan and his legal team have not issued any official public statement regarding the matter.
Salman Khan’s 1998 Blackback case revisited
The roots of this controversy go back to 1998 when Salman Khan and several co-stars of Hum Saath Saath Hain were accused of poaching endangered blackbuck during the film’s shoot in Rajasthan.
The case has been in the legal spotlight for years. In 2018, Salman was convicted under the Wildlife Protection Act and sentenced to five years in prison with a fine of INR 25,000.Meanwhile, co-accused actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam were acquitted after the court found insufficient evidence against them. Shortly after the judgement, Salman obtained bail from the Jodhpur Sessions Court on April 7, 2018.
Appeals related to the case are still part of the legal process.
Why does the film attract attention?
The combination of real-life controversies, legal battles, celebrity relationships and ongoing public interest has ensured that ‘Kala Hiran: The Battle For Legacy’ remains in the limelight. With the teaser arriving later this month and discussions already ramping up online, the film is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about projects before it even reaches audiences.
