The film stars a group of big names led by Kada Khader Ramadan (4 blocks, Asbestos) also featuring Gael Jim Ilhan, Nicolette Krebitz, Aziz Kapkurt, Moritz Bleibtru, and Nastasja Kinski, and will have its world premiere at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) next month. It will be screened at the Czech festival’s Crystal Globe competition.
in CuppingIlhan plays the role of Kerem, whose secret relationship with a man is revealed. The news sends shockwaves through his family and the local community. His brother Murad, played by Ramadan, struggles to protect him, while long-buried secrets threaten to emerge and tear the family apart.
“Murad is shaken to the core when he learns that his younger brother is gay,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Murad wants to support his brother, but their traditional Muslim family is against it. As a result, he finds himself vulnerable to pressure from all sides – from his father, who has close ties to the local imam, and from his brother’s circle of friends as well.”
Cupping Produced by Said Nour Akush and his company ArtHood Films, with co-producers SugarWorkz, Lightburst Pictures and JPJ Film Productions. Director of photography is Emre Erkmen, with ArtHood Entertainment handling international sales, with Neue Visionen Filmverleih releasing the film in Germany.
