Bulgarian director duo Kristina Gruzeva and Petar Valchanov return to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) for its 60th edition next month after winning the Crystal Globe competition in 2019 with father (In every way).
So, it’s no surprise that those heading to the Czech festival, and those following from afar, are looking forward to seeing what they have in store for their return with their new feature, Black money for white nightsa tragicomedy starring Tanya Shahova, Ivan Savov, Margita Gosheva, Ivan Barnev, and Sibyla Petrova and co-written with Dezho Taralizhkov.
The film, which has its world premiere at KVIFF and runs from July 3-11, follows an elderly couple who have been saving money from small bribes for their dream trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, where they want to finally experience the white nights. In this natural phenomenon, the sun never dips low enough below the horizon to result in total darkness. However, when Russia invades Ukraine, the couple’s travel agency is affected. And so all their savings.
KVIFF website describes Black money for white nights As “a portrait of a generation forced to reevaluate their values as they question everything that is considered black and white in post-Soviet society.” The film’s director of photography was Alexander Stanishev, and editing was handled by Yorgos Mavropsaridis. Cercamon handles global sales.
