Imax has unveiled a deal for ten new big screen locations with Australian exhibition giant Hoyts Cinemas.
The agreement for new Laser Cinema venues across Australia and New Zealand builds on a previous deal for four theaters and will bring the number of Imax screens to 14 to be operational at Hoyts Arena by 2028.
“Expanding our Imax range will give even more audiences access to one of the most immersive and technologically advanced cinema experiences. This investment reflects our continued focus on innovation and ensuring Hoyts remains at the forefront of premium cinema,” Damian Keogh, CEO and Chairman of Hoyts Group, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Australian exhibitor, like its global peers, is benefiting from a post-pandemic Hollywood box office rebound, and is using premium screens like those produced by IMAX to build momentum. The Hoyts agreement also boosts Imax Cinema’s presence in Australia from one location in 2022 to 10 currently, with a further 14 screens backlogged.
In 2025, IMAX saw six new locations open in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth in time for the film’s premiere. Avatar: Fire and Ashes. “Australia is one of our highest-performing markets globally, where demand for Imax has outstripped our footprint. Together with Hoyts – an outstanding partner with a proven track record of delivering premium cinematic experiences – we are moving quickly to meet this demand and bring the Imax experience to even more audiences,” Giovanni Dolci, Imax’s chief commercial officer, said in a statement.
The Toronto-based film technology company added that Imax had a record 2025 take of A$18.6 million (US$12.1 million) at the Australian box office on the strength of titles like Hail Mary project, The upcoming films were also shot with special Imax cameras such as Mortal Kombat 2 and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Hoyts operates more than 500 screens across its Australia and New Zealand circuit.
