“I would never sell integrity for work short…” I quit and moved on: Kalpana Iyer opens up about not trading ‘principles’ for disrespect and mediocre roles

Veteran actress and former beauty queen Kalpana Iyer spoke about one of the toughest phases of her career. She shared how changing times in the film industry forced her to make tough decisions to continue working.

In a recent Instagram post, she explained that she had to accept limited opportunities and roles to survive in the industry. Returning to that period, she talked about the difficulties, pressures and compromises she faced during her career.Today, the actress shared a series of throwback pictures from her films on Instagram and said, “The journey of the TV industry started for me when an amazing woman and a wonderful creative woman envisioned me in a role that no one could have imagined before her… It took days because my avatar was that of a dancer and a vamp and all negative roles were my forte but she saw something and agreed to do my first TV serial because she convinced me that I can do it and want to do it.” She and I had agreed to do KASHISH for CPC Delhi to be directed by a very amazing director MS Meena Vaishnavi.

(sic)Kalpana Iyer added, “A move that will give me some amazing opportunities to grow and do some amazing and wonderful roles and characters in… Banegi Apni Baat, Dillagi, Junoon, Dard, Waqt Yule Love Stories., Chandrakanta, Kurukshetra, Farmaan, Margarita and many more for a long time. Television has kept me busy and given me a lot of enjoyment and financially it was comfortable and I was happy with my husband.” Life… Then there were some changes and without sounding bitter, I have to admit that all the changes were not in my favor because a new mindset and a new kind of attitude became the norm and slowly I had to either tolerate the disrespect and settle for mediocre roles and low wages in the name of fees and simply understand that in order to survive I have to accept anything, everything and any role without complaint.

“My principles and values cannot be traded for anything, and I would never trade integrity for work, nor would I ever, so… I resigned and moved on with my life.”She started her journey in the entertainment industry as a model and gained fame after winning a beauty pageant. Later, she became a familiar face in Hindi cinema during the late 1970s and 1980s, gaining popularity for her performances as a dancer and character artist.Meanwhile, she was also seen in several notable films, including ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Satte Pe Satta’, ‘Anokha Rishta’, ‘Armaan’, ‘Humse Hai Zamana’, ‘Wardat’ and others.
