Creator of Cuppy, star of the web series Cupcake good advicecalls out BuzzFeed for selling the character to Amazon for an AI-generated animated series.
Loryn Brantz said on her Instagram account, saying she was “horrified and disgusted that BuzzFeed has taken my character, The Good Advice Cupcake, and given her to an AI platform.” Brantz initially developed Cuppy as a comedic actress during her time at BuzzFeed before it was turned into an animated web series by animator and voice actress Kyra Kupetsky.
“My time at BuzzFeed was marked by constant exposure to exploitation and lying,” she continued. “They repeatedly assured me in good faith that they would never do anything with Cuppy without my input, but they didn’t offer me any legal options, insisting I would never need them. The news is that this character, Which depends on my personality What I made as a microphone to spread love and positivity was turned into a soulless artificial intelligence doll, as if I had removed my intestines from my body.
“Someone leaked news to me early on that there were talks, and I directly begged CEO Jonah Peretti not to do it. Instead, he tried to get me to sign an NDA. Obviously I didn’t do it. This is an assault on artists everywhere. I encourage you to boycott BuzzFeed and any AI-generated or AI-adjacent anime,” Brantz concluded.
Earlier on Wednesday, Amazon announced it had greenlighted three startup projects from its GenAI Creators Fund, which will give filmmakers, digital creators and tech startups access to Amazon’s AI tools and funding to produce “high-quality cinematic entertainment.”
Cupcake and friends from Buzzfeed Studios was among three original animated series that will use Amazon’s Project Nara platform, a new production tool on Amazon Web Services that features artificial intelligence tools.
