Life officially imitates art by Dani Rojas from Ted Lasso.
Christo Fernandez, who plays the beloved AFC Richmond striker in the hit Apple TV+ series led by Jason Sudeikis, has signed a real-life professional soccer contract with El Paso Locomotive FC, the USL Championship club revealed Tuesday on X. The terms and duration of the deal have not been disclosed, and are still awaiting league and federation approval. Fernandez joins the American second division club after a two-month trial.
“The rumors were true. Welcome to El Paso, Cristo Fernandez,” the team wrote.
“Football has always been a big part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally has never left my heart,” Fernandes said in a statement on the club’s website. “I am extremely grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC – the club, coaches, staff and especially my teammates – for opening the doors for me and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one.”
Coach Junior Gonzalez added: “Cristo is a great addition to our roster and adds another attacking threat to our attacking line. His passion for the game and leadership qualities in our locker room allow us to continue to grow the positive culture we strive for as a club.”
The 35-year-old actor played youth football in Mexico before a knee injury at the age of 15 derailed his career ambitions. Now, more than two decades later, Fernandez is returning to the sport for real.
The signing feels particularly full circle given Fernandez’s role as Dani Rojas, the Mexican striker Ted Lasso Known for his famous phrase: “Fútbol is life!”
