Madonna, Shakira and BTS will perform for the first-ever halftime show of a FIFA World Cup Final, the organization announced on Wednesday night.
In a video (below) posted to social media at 9pm PT on Wednesday, Elmo, Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog and the Animal join Coldplay’s Chris Martin to share the news.
“But this show is more about us than me. I mean, it’s about teamwork,” Martin said.
All three shows will headline halftime during the World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, a major musical moment associated with the world’s most-watched sporting event. For American viewers, the tournament is broadcast on Fox in English and Telemundo in Spanish.
The halftime show will also raise money for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, improving access to quality education and football for children around the world.
FIFA first introduced the halftime show concept last year for the Club World Cup, with J Balvin, Doja Cat and Tems performing. Both shows, presented in partnership with Global Citizen, were coordinated by Martin.
The new halftime show concept reflects an increasing presence of music at major sporting events, with other examples including the Chainsmokers’ recent “bridge show” during the NCAA Basketball Finals in April.
The World Cup begins on June 11, and matches are scheduled to be held in stadiums across the United States as well as in Canada and Mexico. This year marks the first time the United States has hosted the World Cup since 1994.
