FIFA, the organizer of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, said it will allow rainbow flags to fly among stadium fans in Friday’s championship match in Seattle between Iran and Egypt.

“The 2026 World Cup is an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds. Fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome at matches and events. Public human rights statements, including rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity, are permitted under the 2026 World Cup Stadium Code of Conduct and can be displayed inside stadiums provided they are used in a way consistent with the Code,” FIFA said in a statement. Hollywood Reporter.

The guidance issued by FIFA comes on the heels of the soccer federations of Iran and Egypt separately calling on the World Cup organizer to ban any symbols, including rainbow flags, in support of the LGBTQ+ community at Seattle Stadium during Friday’s match.

Both Iran and Egypt are Muslim-majority countries and impose severe penalties on members of the LGBTQ+ communities. The objections from the Iranian and Egyptian soccer federations came long after the Seattle World Cup Organizing Committee, which is not aligned with FIFA, earlier this year described the June 26 match in Seattle as a “pride match” to coincide with the city’s annual Pride celebrations scheduled for this weekend.

It has now emerged that Egypt and Iran will compete against each other in their national team’s final match on Friday in Seattle. The 2026 World Cup Stadium Code of Conduct includes rules on the size of flags and banners allowed in stadiums during tournament matches, and does not permit symbols of “discrimination of any kind against a country, individual or group on the basis of race, skin colour, national or social origin, gender identity and expression, disability, language, religion or gender identity”.
Political or other opinion, birth, wealth, other status, or sexual orientation
Or for any other reason.”

The geopolitical ramifications of the Seattle match include that Iran, if it wins over Egypt, is preparing for a match against Team USA on July 6 to reach the quarterfinals. This potential clash comes as the United States and Iran continue their attempts to negotiate a potential peace agreement amid a fragile ceasefire after a regional war in the Middle East that began on February 28.
