The penultimate episode of Sunday night trance Season 3 revealed the brutal death of one of the main cast members.

After ruining his wedding night, cutting off his toe and toe and burying him alive, Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs meets his fate when a venomous rattlesnake slithers its way into the hole he’s buried in and bites him. All of this was the result of Nate’s business arrangements with Naz (Jack Topalian), which left him in debt. Naz later goes to Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and says she has 72 hours to deliver the money Nate owes her. Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) then killed Naz to help Cassie and Maddie (Alexa Demie) free Nate, but when the coffin he was buried in was dug up, his lifeless body was revealed.

In an exclusive interview with Respectedthe creator of the hit HBO series, Sam Levinson, revealed what led to the killing of Nate, the main character in the series since the series debuted in 2019 who was known for being controlling and abusive.

“There’s this kind of funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma and with that in mind, I always think, ‘Well, how can I give them that?'” Levinson told the publication. “How can I give them what they want, but make it horrific and disturbing, and by the time it happens, the audience isn’t sure they want it?”

The article goes on to note that Levinson “knew from the beginning that Nate was done for the season.” Nate, who experienced grief, trauma, and violence throughout the first two seasons, showed glimpses of humanity in season three as Levinson “muddied the moral waters.” The outlet notes that this twist was a setup for what happened in Episode 7, “Rain or Shine.”

“It’s almost like you’re saying, ‘Oh, you wanted him to get his comeuppance…?’ Well,” Levinson said. “The feeling of complicity with the audience is always an interesting tone within that kind of larger structure.” “You end up saying, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know. Should he have gotten better? Did he deserve it?'” It’s always interesting to ask an audience these kinds of questions.

He continued, “That’s what was exciting about the characters coming out of high school. They’re in the real world and the consequences are real. There’s no safety net. I love that Wild West, the frontier side of it where you can make something of yourself, but you’re going to have to live with the consequences.”

Levinson revealed that his original idea was for Nate to die from suffocation or heat while being buried alive.

“I’ve always loved film Candy snatchers Where the girl is buried alive with a tube that serves as an air vent. “So I imagined Nate would be buried alive.”

However, he explained that he changed his mind about how to kill Nate one day while driving to work with his wife, Ashley Levinson.

“It was one of those wonderful days in L.A. where the weather was perfect. We were listening to Otis Redding. The windows are down and we’re driving to Warner Bros. and I’m looking out the window,” Levinson said. “I just saw this picture of a rattlesnake heading toward this tube. It strikes and the snake feels movement in the ground. And I thought, ‘What if the snake goes into the tube and then gets stuck inside the coffin with this rattlesnake?’

He added: “It’s kind of a funny moment where you realize that not all dark scenes come from a dark place. I turned to Ash and said, ‘I think I’ve got that.'” She explained how Nate dies in that sequence. She said, “That’s what you were thinking?”

After the episode’s premiere, Elordi said in an after-show segment on HBO that it was a “great way to get off” and the “absolutely peaceful” filming inside the coffin. He also shared what it was like working with a real snake in the scene.

“They had a boa constrictor and put a fake rattle on the end of it, and Sam was like, ‘We’re going to drop a snake on you,'” Elordi said. “The snakes were making noises, which is really worrying when you’re locked in a box.”

but Wuthering Heights The star went on to describe the snake as “so cute.”

“He was very likable, so he would sit next to me and be nice,” he said. “But he was really sleepy. I had to kind of nudge him to get him up.”

Overall, Elordi was happy with the way his character was dismissed.

“Nate was someone who made a lot of mistakes and made a lot of dark choices. It’s great to see it all come to where it did. This show is a huge part of, not just my career, but my life. It’s been amazing, and I’m so proud to be a part of this.”
