Elliot Page talks about growing up as a weirdo: 'You feel like there's something wrong with you'

Over the years, Elliot Page, best known for The Umbrella Academy, has been open about his journey as a trans man and his experiences growing up queer. From struggling with his identity to coming out and living his truth, the actor has traversed a deeply personal path.

In a recent interview, he spoke about these challenges and the judgmental environment in which he grew up.

The 39-year-old actor recently lent his voice as narrator and also co-produced the documentary Second Nature, which explores same-sex relationships in the animal kingdom. Speaking to People, Page shared how his experiences as a gay person motivated him to support the project and help bring it to life.Reflecting on his childhood, he said: “I think that feeling of growing up as a gay kid and feeling lonely — because you feel like you’re alone, even though of course you weren’t — you feel excluded, you feel like there’s something wrong with you.”He also highlighted the importance of the documentary, noting how heteronormative ideas are often imposed on society. “You carry such shame, and there are such implications and consequences in terms of censorship and erasure…and this idea that nature is organized around a homogeneous normative system is completely wrong,” he added.

In 2020, Page shared a heartfelt statement on social media, announcing that he was transgender. “Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am transgender, my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To be at this place in my life.”
