Christopher Nolan defends his creative choice to use modern, contemporary English fonts in the film rather than Homer’s words from his Greek classic.
Ahead of the release of Christopher Nolan’s latest project, ‘The Odyssey’, the film has generated a lot of buzz and controversy online. One of the biggest discourses online is about the type of dialogue the movie uses.
While the story, based on Homer’s Greek classic, is set in the 8th or 7th century BC, most trailers show the characters in the film speaking with an American accent and using modern English dialogue. Although many criticized the film for not being accurate to the book, the director defended his creative choice in one of his recent interviews. Here’s what Christopher Nolan had to say about it.
Christopher Nolan defends his creative choices in The Odyssey
Christopher Nolan actively defends his choice to use modern English for most of the dialogue for his next major project. While speaking to the Los Angeles Times about it, Nolan said that he consciously made a creative choice while making the film and it wasn’t a mistake. When giving the reasoning behind his choice, Nolan said he wanted to use language that was not intellectually connected to the story but something people could connect with emotionally.
He also added, “Maybe I’m being naive, it might bite me in the ass, but I wanted an earthy narrative. For me it was a no-brainer.”This is not the only thing that the director thought well about in the film. While speaking with TIME magazine earlier this year, the star shared details about how many materials, including bronze daggers, were made to capture the exact shape of the weapons of the time.
He even detailed how the props were made to be darker to provide more accuracy. He also added a defense of the casting of rapper Travis Scott in “The Odyssey” as the poet. “I chose it because I wanted to point out the idea that this story was passed down as oral poetry, which is similar to rap music,” he shared.
