Acquired China Lion Film Distribution I know who you arethe latest feature film from veteran Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, for the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The specialty label will release it across those markets in early July – days after the film debuts on the mainland.
The deal covers all media rights, and specific dates have not yet been determined by region. I know who you are It opened in China on June 19, earning about $9 million for third place in its first weekend.
Adapted from Zhang Ce’s 1992 novel No regrets about tracking – Previously the basis for a highly regarded television series – the film is a decades-spanning cat-and-mouse tale set in the early years of the People’s Republic. Lei Jiayin plays a popular police chief who becomes convinced that a quiet local teacher, played by Hu Ge, is a deep spy, and spends the next four decades trying to prove it – a surveillance operation that slowly develops into something closer to a personal relationship.
Feng is among the most commercially successful directors China has produced, credits included Aftershock, Back to 1942, I am not Madame Bovary, youths and Only the cloud knows; Release China Lion youths In North America in 2017.
Lei recently appeared in director Zhang Yimou’s spy thriller intimidation And in Peng Fei Take offWhich will be shown at the New York Asian Film Festival next month. He starred in Diao Yinan’s Cannes competition title Wild Geese Lakeopposite Joy Lun Mei. He also starred in the famous Wong Kar Wai movie Shanghai flowers series.
China Lion has picked up the film from Damai Entertainment, the studio behind both intimidation and Dear you. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Los Angeles, China Lion specializes in releasing Chinese-language films to theaters in North America.
