Chappelle-Rowan is telling her side of the story after Brazilian soccer player Jorginio Frilo criticized the pop star and her team’s “very aggressive” treatment of his daughter at a Sao Paulo hotel on Saturday.
The athlete claimed on his Instagram story that one of the Grammy winner’s security guards confronted his wife and daughter at the hotel where they were staying after his child “simply walked past the singer’s table, appeared to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mother.”
Frilo did not mention the child’s name, although his wife, Catherine Harding, has an 11-year-old daughter with Jude Law.
Ruan, who headlines Lollapalooza Brazil in Sao Paulo, took to her Instagram Story on Sunday morning to address the situation, clarifying that her “personal security” was not involved.
“I will only tell half the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard that was not my personal security,” the “Pink Pony Club” artist detailed in a video. “I didn’t even see, I didn’t even see a woman and a child. No one came to me. No one bothered me. I was just sitting down to have breakfast at my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel too.”
Rowan continued, “The fact that the security guard was… I didn’t ask the security guard to come up and talk to this mother and child. They didn’t come to me. They didn’t do anything. It’s unfair for security to assume that someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because no action was taken. I don’t hate people who like my music. I don’t hate kids. Like that’s crazy.” “I’m sorry to the mother and the baby that someone was assuming something, that you would do something, and if I feel uncomfortable, it makes me really sad. You don’t deserve that.”
In a lengthy post by Frillo on social media, he said his daughter was “very happy to see an artist that she really likes, or had a crush on” before the hotel incident.
“By coincidence, they are staying in the same hotel as this artist. While eating breakfast, the artist passed by their table. My daughter, like any child, recognized [sic] She was excited, he explained, and just wanted to make sure it was really her. “The worst part was that she didn’t even approach her. She simply walked past the singer’s table, made sure it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mother. She didn’t say anything, and she didn’t ask for anything.”
Shortly after, the football star said: “A senior security guard came to their table while they were still eating breakfast and started speaking in a very aggressive manner to my wife and daughter, saying she should not allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ others.”
Frilo wrote that his “daughter was shaken up badly and cried a lot” after the interaction. He added in his post: “It’s sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans. Ultimately, they are the ones building all of this. I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child.”
Since Rowan’s rise to fame, she has been known to speak her mind about aggressive fan behavior and set firm boundaries when it comes to non-consensual physical and social interactions in public.
