Legendary singer Chaka Khan has partnered with HarborView to acquire a stake in her catalog, Hollywood Reporter Can provide an exclusive report.
The details of the agreement, including the rights and amount acquired by HarborView, are unclear, as the company did not disclose any of the terms of the deal, describing it only as a partnership “focused on catalog development, global licensing, and developing new creative projects.” Financial details of the deal were also not disclosed.
“Chaka Khan is an incredible talent – an artist whose voice, spirit and presence have moved effortlessly across generations without ever losing his power or spirit,” Sheris Clark, founder and CEO of HarborView, said in a statement. “Not only is she an iconic singer, she is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose energy, authenticity, and sense of self continue to inspire. As a musical powerhouse and fashion icon, Chaka embodies a rare combination of power, style, and spirit. We are honored to work alongside her as she continues to advance her legacy in ways that feel more vibrant and resonant than ever before.”
Khan is one of the most popular singers of her generation, and is a particularly influential figure in funk and R&B music as a member of the group Rufus and as a solo act. Among her most popular recordings are “I’m Every Woman,” “Tell Me Something Good,” and “Through the Fire.” The deal comes about a month after Khan released her latest song, “Chuckazilla.”
“Music is the most powerful and generous thing I know. When you let it go, it always comes back bigger. Seeing these songs still finding new ears and new hearts fills me with joy.” Khan said in a statement. “This beautiful group at HarborView understands what my music means, not just as a business, but as a body of love. And that matters deeply to me.”
HarborView has been one of the most active companies in the catalog sourcing industry over the past several years. Prior to partnering with Khan, the company had deals with artists including Kelly Clarkson, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Christine McVie.
