Jonah Hill showed off a completely different look in his new movie outcomewhich left its stars speechless.
Hill co-wrote and directed the black comedy, about beloved Hollywood star Reeve Hawke (played by Keanu Reeves) who learns that someone is blackmailing him with a strange video from his past. He goes on a journey to make amends to anyone who may have wronged him in an attempt to find the blackmailer, with the help of his close friends (Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer) and crisis lawyer Ira (Hill).
In order to play Ira, Hill shaved his head and had a bushy gray beard, which his fellow actors were unaware of until they were on set. At the film’s New York premiere on Monday — where Hill, Reeves, Diaz and Bomer conducted red carpet interviews in a group rather than the traditional one-on-one interviews — Diaz noted that because there were no scenes with Hill’s character, she was fired “when she showed up and he approached me as a director” with the new look and while still dressed as Ira.
“I looked at him and said, ‘Is that…?’ “It’s Ira,” he says. She continued: “And I was like, ‘Oh my God.’” “The gray beard and the bald head, it was outrageous, and I couldn’t imagine how terrible it was until I saw a clip of the film. And then it all made sense.”
Hill offered more insight into the transformation, saying, “When I play a character, I find a lot of references, a lot of docs, reality TV shows, books, photography books.” “Ira’s look came very quickly. Because I wrote it, I have the luxury of living with the character for a long time before anyone else is invited.”
Hill revealed that he originally was not going to play the character and had only intended to write and direct the film but was convinced to take on the role by casting director Ellen Lewis. “I was like, what about this person, what about this person?” “You do, Jonah,” Hale joked. “I thought, ‘Okay, I’ll let someone great ask me to do this, and I won’t assume I’m the best person for the job.’”
