Britney Spears has pleaded guilty to reckless driving in a drunk driving case, avoiding jail time as the pop icon will instead face a year of probation.

According to CBS News, Spears did not attend court in Ventura County on Monday, and her attorney, Michael A. Goldstein on her behalf to submit her application. According to the outlet, Spears agreed to a plea called a “wet reckless,” where the defendant can plead guilty and be placed on probation instead.

This petition comes weeks after Spears was arrested for the first time in connection with the incident last March. Last week, she was formally charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol and at least one drug. In April, Spears entered rehab.

“Britney will take the right steps and abide by the law, and we hope this is the first step in the long-overdue change that needs to happen in Britney’s life,” a representative for the singer said after her arrest in March. “We hope she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her children will spend time with her. Her loved ones will make the long-awaited plan to set her up for success for well-being.”

The DUI is the latest speed bump in Spears’ personal life that has come under intense scrutiny. Spears was released from the controversial, court-ordered conservatorship in 2021 after it was first established in 2008, and her father, Jamie Spears, was removed as conservator of the pop star’s estate.
