The famous British actor, known for his roles in Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes And recently, Andordirects The Lord of the Rings: The Search for Gollumwhich features Peter Jackson as producer as well as a star-studded cast including Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan and Leo Woodall. Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen will reprise their beloved roles as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf, respectively, from Jackson’s Oscar-winning trilogy.
Serkis spoke to the BBC this week about what he has in store for the latest adaptation of Tolkien’s work, currently scheduled for release in December 2027. He began by explaining that the story “falls right in between… The hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogies and books actually. “It’s a very deep dive into the psychology and history of Gollum before he became Gollum, but also with a very pressing question from Gandalf about the possible origin of this ring that Bilbo Baggins has,” he said.
“The stalking process takes place in two really different dimensions, that’s as much as I can tell at the moment,” he adds.
Then the Hollywood star confirms that he is not directing the new one Lord of the Rings film, Shadow of the pastwritten by none other than chat show legend Stephen Colbert: “I think this post was taken, put it that way,” Serkis says. “This would be a great story too. I know this is something Stephen was very excited to be a part of.”
Part of the interview focuses on fan criticism of Serkis Search for Gollum The cast, which so far consists solely of white actors, though more major announcements are expected in the coming months.
The BBC notes that Serkis has been an equality activist throughout his decades-long career, and reported him saying in 2018 that being one of the few white actors in… Black Panther The group gave him a more personal understanding of what it feels like to be an ethnic minority in the industry.
But he still accepts it Search for Gollum The cast is similar to the almost all-white lineup from the original Lord of the Rings films. “Tolkien himself was very influenced by Norse mythology, and there’s a lot of that feeling. The Shire feels very white, you know…”, Serkis says, before saying: “They’re not too concerned about what’s happening outside the Shire’s borders, but they know they don’t want people coming.”
“Yes, there have been criticisms,” he says of the lack of diversity in Tolkien’s world. “This movie in particular acknowledges that to some extent. But we don’t think we’re going to do the politically correct version of the movie just for the sake of casting and check boxes. So, it’s only when it’s fundamentally relevant.”
Earlier this year, Serkis confirmed for the first time that the role of Aragorn would be played by a new actor Search for Gollum.
He is speaking to the British press this week to promote the UK theatrical release Animal farman animated adaptation of George Orwell’s story.
