A different actor will fill Strider’s shoes.

Andy Serkis has confirmed for the first time that the role of Aragorn will be played by a new actor in his next film Lord of the Rings prequel, Search for Gollum.

talking to rant screen, Serkis said the role played by Viggo Mortensen in the original trilogy will be recast.

“I don’t know what’s going on right now, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we’re recasting the role and we’re going to find someone,” Serkis said.

Directed by Serkis (who also reprises his motion-capture role as Gollum). Search for Gollum It tells the events that happened between The hobbit Triple f Lord of the Rings Trilogy, when Aragorn and Gandalf set out on a quest to find Gollum to gain more information about Bilbo’s mysterious ring.

What was “there” was a widespread assumption among fans that the role would be recast given Aragorn plays an integral role in the Search for Gollum The story – perhaps even the main character – and Mortensen’s return have not yet been announced (while Ian McKellen confirmed he would return as Gandalf last year).

Additionally, Elijah Wood has strongly hinted that he will return as Frodo (“I’m not able to say anything officially until it’s announced, but I will say I’m excited about the prospect of another movie… There’s a real sense of getting the band back together… I certainly don’t want anyone else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able”).

Recasting Aragorn makes sense because the human character is younger in the new film than in his first appearance Lord of the Rings. Mortensen was 40 years old when he first started filming Fellowship of the Ring He is now 67 years old. Having McKellen recast Gandalf is a bit easier as the actor was made to look over 60 years old when he played Gandalf, and his face was somewhat hidden under a long beard, wig and prosthetic nose. If Frodo does appear in the film, it will likely be a fairly minor role, and de-aging is always an option for the (still looking very youthful) 45-year-old Wood.

But when? Search for Gollum It was announced in 2024, and Mortensen suggested it GQ He would be open to playing the character again, saying: “Absolutely. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I will eventually hear about it. I love playing that character. I learned a lot from playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I wouldn’t do it unless I was right for it in terms of my age now and so on. I wouldn’t do it unless I was right for the character. It would be silly of me to do it any other way.”

Director Peter Jackson returns as producer, alongside his producing partners on previous films, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The Lord of the Rings: The Search for Gollum It is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027.
