What other documentary is there about the brutal 2022 quadruple murder of four University of Idaho students?
On July 29, Netflix will join Peacock (Idaho student murders) and Amazon Prime Video (One Night in Idaho: The College Murders) with a documentary series on the Idaho student murders, The Idaho Murders: A College Nightmare. but this It’s the “ultimate” choice, says Netflix and executive producer Joe Berlinger (Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey).
Skye Borgman (from the excellent Netflix docuseries UNIDENTIFIED NUMBER: High school catfish) directs The Idaho Murders: A College Nightmarewhich features “unprecedented access to victims’ families and police footage” for each streamer. You can see some bodycam footage in the trailer (below).
On November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were murdered at an off-campus home. For several weeks, their killer remained unknown. DNA evidence left on the knife sheath pointed to Brian Kohberger, a doctoral student at nearby Washington State University, who has since pleaded guilty to the murders.
“When I first came to this story, I kept coming back to one simple thought: Four young men lost their lives, and they deserve to be remembered far more than the tragedy that took them,” Borgman said in a statement. “Making this series became very personal for me because I felt a responsibility to keep Kylie Goncalves, Madison Mugen, Zana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin at the center of every decision we make. At a time when so much attention has been focused on the case itself, I felt it was important to create something that brings the focus back to who they were, the lives they lived and the love that continues to surround them.”
“As a father of two daughters who had wonderful college experiences, this case struck a chord with me, unlike many stories I’ve covered,” Berlinger said. “Although we were among the first documentarians to arrive at the scene, it was important to us to tell the whole story. This documentary is the definitive telling: unprecedented access to key family members, never-before-seen body camera footage, police interviews that reveal details of the case for the first time, and access to forensic evidence. We felt the best way to honor the victims was to tell the complete and accurate story of everything that happened that terrible night in Idaho.”
Gina Scarlata, John Kamen and Gene Isaacson are also producing the three-episode series, which hails from RadicalMedia and Third Eye Motion Picture Company.
