Kangana Ranaut, who is currently busy promoting her film ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddaata’, shared her thoughts on the controversy surrounding ‘Peddi’. The actress admitted that cinema has long been harsh in its portrayal of women.
She also said that objectification is a broader societal issue that extends beyond the film industry.
Kangana Ranaut talks about the objectification of women in cinema
As the controversy continues over Janhvi Kapoor’s portrayal of Achiyama in the film Peddi, Kangana Ranaut shared her views in a conversation with India Today. When asked why mainstream cinema continues to rely on hypersexualized female characters, Kangana said objectification cannot be pinned only on films.“Women are objectified even if you go to a local train. So, to say they are objectified in films is very wrong. If you go to a local train, pushing, punching and even the local bus for that matter. This happens on the road too. So, anyway, it has nothing to do with films,” she said.Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut also acknowledged the fact that the film industry has failed when it comes to women representation.
“But yes, the lens of films has been very harsh towards women. Be it songs like ‘Sexy-sexy mujhe log bole’, ‘Sarkailo Khatia’, all these things,” she added. She went on to add, “But sometimes the line between seduction and vulgarity and complete injustice to women is blurred, intentionally or sometimes unintentionally. So, I think that’s the nature of entertainment.”
Kangana Ranaut speaks out about excessive online trolling
While calling for course correction where necessary, the ‘Manikarnika’ actress also called out random anger online.
She said: “This kind of correction is needed, and sometimes there is a lot of trolling and bias. Because even sensuality is a part of art. Sex is also a depiction of the story. And the film industry is not your educational subject; you are coming here to entertain.”Kangana stated that people should understand the context before passing judgement. The actress shared, “I would say in general, sometimes I feel like today we are also in a place where trolling for anything or everything is very harsh.
We don’t ask what exactly it is. What is the topic? Maybe this topic is gray. Maybe this whole setup has some connection to the plot. Without any of that, there’s just trolling, trolling, trolling.
So, even that’s not good.”
