Abhishek Bachchan says marriage to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is based on equality and partnership: “Through engagement and sharing...”

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have been married since 2007. They became parents to a baby girl, Aaradhya Bachchan in 2011. In a recent interview, Abhishek spoke about how friendship has remained at the core of his marriage with Aishwarya since their first meeting. When asked that most men do not prefer a stronger woman or a more successful woman, Abhishek said, “When my father married, my mother was a much bigger star than my father. So it was nothing abnormal. I was not brought up to think that you have to be dominant; it was always about partnership. I have known Aishwarya since the beginning of my career. The second film I did was with her, and she is the one actress I have worked with more than others.”

We weren’t in a relationship then, we were friends, we’ve always been friends.

He also talked about not having any ego and marrying equals. “When we finally met through engagement and then marriage, it was always about partnership. There was never a discussion like, ‘I’ll bring the food and you take care of the house.’ It wasn’t even discussed. It flows very naturally.”

But this comes from too much ego for me. I’m not someone who wants to win because someone else laid down and that’s how you walk.

I was raised to believe that you earn your victories. My father has not divorced me or made a film for me yet. In fact, I produced a movie for him. My pleasure. Whatever I am today, I can say that I achieved it on my own merit. The reason I say ego is because I’ve never been the type of person that someone else has to give up or stop running in order for me to win this race.On the work front, Abhishek will next be seen in King starring Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone and others.
