Netflix A different world The sequel series scheduled a different premiere date.
The remake, which serves as a follow-up to the 1987-1993 NBC sitcom centering on students at HBCUs, will premiere on September 24, 2026, exactly 39 years to the day the OG series debuted. The streamer announced the news on Friday at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF). Netflix says this date underscores its “commitment to honoring the series’ legacy while reintroducing Hellman to a new generation.”
Several members of the original cast will reprise their roles along with a new cast of actors playing Hellman’s students, and the series’ creative team also includes alumni of the original series. On hand to announce the date were showrunner/executive producer Felicia Pride, executive producer/director Debbie Allen and star Malé Joy Moon, the leader of the new class.
New A different world The film follows Deborah (Moon), the youngest daughter of Whitley (Jasmine Jaye) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), who begins her first year at Hillman, her parents’ alma mater.
“Deborah finds it difficult to escape the shadow of her parents as she sets out to build her own legacy, while having the time of her life, alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest,” the pitching line reads.
Alijah Kaye, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedy Reese, and Chibuikem Uche also star, alongside original series alumni Jay, Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, and Cree Summer. The new cast also includes Vincent Jamal Hopper, Elijah J. Roberts, Renee Harrison, Vamicia Ward, Dasan Frazier, Tichina Arnold, Joshua Suiter, Raven Goodwin, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, and Norman Nixon Jr. Also reprising their previous roles are Karen Malina White, Ajay Sanders, Don Lewis, Glynn Turman, Charnell Brown, Jennifer Lewis, and Jada Pinkett. Netflix picked up the series in 2025 and finished filming the 10-episode season in April. pride (Bel Air, Grey’s Anatomy) serves as showrunner and executive produces with A different world Alums Allen (who directed most of the original series and directed three episodes of the new season), Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Tom Werner. Mandy Summers also executive produces.
