Early school hours have been introduced in Jharkhand as authorities respond to extreme heatwave conditions across the region
Temperatures across northern India could reach 44 degrees Celsius next week, as heatwave conditions intensify, the Meteorological Department has warned. The warning prompted quick action in Jharkhand, where private schools revised their daily schedules to reduce students’ exposure to the harsh afternoon sun.A directive from the Independent Schools Association requires new timings to be implemented in all its special schools from Monday onwards. Children should start their lessons at 6:45 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m. instead of having an afternoon distraction session. This step is expected to help ensure that children return home before temperatures rise after midday.Timing to become more flexibleAccording to the new schedule, schools will operate during early morning times when the weather is cooler.
It was pointed out that children will learn better without the effects of hot weather interfering with them. Moreover, it was stated that exposure of children to the harsh rays of the sun becomes intolerable after 12:00 noon.Reasons for implementing the new timingsAs vice-president of the Unaided Schools Association, Sharath Chandran said the welfare of children was taken into consideration first. It was learned that children could easily become dehydrated due to the high temperatures during the journey home from school.
All private schools were consulted about this proposal, and they accepted it.Parents were sensitized through various platformsParents were contacted from Saturday via their mobile phones, portal messages and SMS notifications. Children must now be dropped off at school according to the newly revised timetable. Parents have been asked to pay more attention during periods of distraction as temperatures begin to rise.Doctors recommend cautionDoctors recommend that children carry rehydration solution or lemon juice to avoid dehydration. Doctors also suggested that children wear light-colored cotton clothes so that they can avoid overheating. The new school schedule will remain as it is until the weather improves, and the organization continues to track temperature changes. It was clear that the current arrangement was only temporary, and the organization would continue to evaluate the situation based on new expectations. Cooperation takes place between the school administration and local authorities to address any problem. Parents have been warned to be vigilant regarding hydration and to protect children from sun exposure during the day.It was reported that more arrangements may be added if temperatures are higher than expected in the area in the coming days.
