Will the India-US trade agreement be announced at the G7? US Trade Representative points to further talks, says agreement not imminent

A senior US administration official said on Saturday that trade will be on the agenda when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets US President Donald Trump at next week’s G7 summit in France, but an India-US trade deal is not expected to be finalized during the meeting.US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will travel to India the week following the G7 summit, the official said, a sign that negotiations are set to continue and that the trade agreement is still under active discussion.“We know that Prime Minister Modi is very ambitious about the role he sees for India and the importance of US-India relations,” the official told reporters. “We think the potential trade deal is part of that.”According to the official, trade issues will feature in discussions between Trump and Modi during the summit, but a final agreement is not expected to be announced at the meeting. The comments provide one of the clearest indications yet from Washington that negotiations are still ongoing even as both sides seek to deepen economic ties. The official said Trump would insist on reaching a “very good deal.”The official added: “We believe it is possible to reach a very good agreement. I do not think we will conclude this agreement in the G7.”
