GI applications cross 2,000 mark on Centre’s pushWhile Kashmir’s Kagzi Padam was the 2,000th application filed on April 2 this year, Sikkim’s Chiaprung application was the 2013 application filed on the same day. Since April 1, 2025, when Khafda Pottery in Kutch became the 1,482nd application filed, the highest number of GI applications, 510, have been filed in FY25-26 alone, the highest number in a single financial year since the first GI for Darjeeling tea was filed in October 2003.In fact, if the last two financial years saw the submission of more than 780 applications for geographical indications, the last three days have seen only 21 applications for geographical indications. So far, as many as 724 GI-marked products have been registered across the country. GI experts attributed the acceleration in applications to the government push that included reducing fees from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1,000 last year.
