Gnani.ai pioneered a text-to-speech model and Bharatgen launched a 17-billion-parameter multilingual foundation model.

Sriram Krishnan, senior White House policy adviser on artificial intelligence (AI), said on Wednesday that the US expects its allies, including India, to build their AI solutions on the American AI stock.

“We want to make sure the world uses the American AI stack. That means from the bottom up…that means our semiconductors and advanced AI chips, Nvidia, AMD, Google’s TPUs and so on. Second, we want to make sure the world uses our AI models, all the companies I mentioned above. And third, it uses our applications.”

He was speaking at a program organized by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) on the sidelines of the India-AI Impact Summit.

Asked about India’s ambitions to build sovereign AI, Krishnan said the US ultimately wants “everyone” to build on the American AI stock, though India “must not give up strategic autonomy”.

“India (as) a key ally, is relying on and building this infrastructure. This does not mean giving up strategic autonomy. Indian companies need to bring in local language support and local culture, and need local approvals for low latency built on infrastructure here.

Coincidentally, Krishnan’s comments came just as three Indian startups Sarvam, BharatGen and Gnani.i launched sovereign large language and voice AI models on Wednesday, with domestic companies looking to make a splash in the competitive AI ecosystem looking for their own ‘deepseek’ moment. These models are designed and trained entirely in India.

Sarvam launched two models: a 30-billion-parameter model and a 105-billion-parameter model, both trained from scratch in India. Gnani.ai pioneered a text-to-speech model and Bharatgen launched a 17-billion-parameter multilingual foundation model.
