Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, in his keynote speech at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, emphasized the belief that the explosive growth of AI over the past few years means “we are increasingly moving closer to the country of geniuses in the data center.” Amodei noted the historical importance of the summit in New Delhi, the fourth edition globally, since the first edition at Bletchley Park in 2023. Amodei thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing together technology leaders and politicians, to be part of New Delhi’s borderline commitments to the impact of artificial intelligence, and noted the ambition he has observed across India in recent days.

“AI agents are more capable than most humans at most things, and they can coordinate faster than humans can,” Amodei says, before adding that this level of ability is something the world has never seen before, with both opportunities and concerns emerging for humanity.

“On the positive side, we have the potential to cure diseases that have been incurable for millennia to radically improve human health, lift billions out of poverty, including the Global South, and create a better world for all,” he says. “On the risk side, I am concerned about the autonomous behavior of AI models, their potential misuse by individuals and governments, and their potential economic displacement.”

Anthropic marked the summit with a tangible signal of intent, including a new office in Bengaluru, the appointment of industry expert Irina Ghose to lead operations locally, and enterprise partnerships. Amodei’s overarching message through the keynote was that India’s role in the global AI ecosystem is crucial to shaping regulation and access.

Beyond commercial expansion, Amodei stressed the importance of outreach. “One dynamic we have observed is that India’s pioneering technology and practices have historically set the standard for the Global South and helped spread technology and humanitarian benefits through the global self,” he noted.

On the risk front, Amodei cast India as a pivotal democratic counterweight in global AI governance. He called for cooperation in safety testing and evaluation in line with emerging AI security institutes around the world. “We would like to work with India on testing and evaluating safety and security risk models in the tradition started by several global and national AI security institutes that have been taken up across the world,” he says.

In his view, there are potential economic issues that are equally pressing. Through Anthropic’s Economic Futures Program and AI Impact Index, the company has begun publishing data on how AI is reshaping labor markets. Amodei indicated his willingness to share these ideas with the Indian government and policymakers. He said that AI will expand the economic pie in India and throughout the Global South.

But he warns that since change is unfolding so quickly, a period of disruption is almost inevitable. The challenge is to manage this transformation collaboratively, facilitating prosperity rather than amplifying inequality.
