The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday said it has provided legal and other assistance to around 500 students and youth arrested during the protests at Jantar Mantar and the Parliament march in Delhi, claiming that its legal team is continuously working to help those who have been detained.
According to the party, support was provided through the academy’s student helpline (8588833548), which receives calls and messages from students seeking help. The party said the initiative was launched on the directions of AAP national conference coordinator Arvind Kejriwal to provide legal assistance to those detained during the protests.
Kejriwal visits the police station, and the party claims that the students have been released
AAP claimed that Kejriwal personally visited Mandir Marg police station, where he met the students who were arrested. According to the party, he informed the students that he would remain at the police station until they were released.
The party claimed that after his visit, around 70 to 80 students detained at Mandir Marg police station, Parliament Street police station and other places were released.
AAP also claimed that some students from Ashok Vihar district received help safely and that a missing student was traced and reunited with his family.
The party described the issue as related to the rights of students and youth and not just a political issue. She said that a dedicated helpline has been launched to provide legal and medical assistance so that any student facing difficulties does not feel unsupported.
The party says legal support will continue
The association said it has consistently stood by people during public agitations and cited its support for farmers during the farmers’ protest as an example. The party confirmed that it provides similar support to students participating in the current demonstrations.
According to the party, the right to express one’s opinion peacefully is a constitutional right, and supporting young people in such circumstances is a social and moral responsibility.
Referring to the ongoing student protest at Jantar Mantar, the AAP said that no participating student or youth will be left without support. She stated that her legal team visited police stations and other relevant locations to provide assistance while maintaining contact with the students via the helpline.
The party reiterated that nearly 500 students and youth have so far received legal and other necessary assistance through the initiative, and said efforts to protect students’ rights will continue.
