A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was shot to death in a targeted attack in Toronto, and police later arrested a Brampton man on charges of first-degree murder.Toronto police said officers responded to a shooting call near Humberwood Avenue and Rexdale Avenue at about 7:23 a.m. Friday, where they found Navneet Kaur suffering from a gunshot wound.
She received emergency medical assistance but was pronounced dead at the scene.Investigators allege that Kaur and the suspect interacted briefly before the man opened fire. Police said the suspect fled before officers arrived, but Ontario Provincial Police located him and arrested him after further investigation.The defendant, a 37-year-old man from Brampton, is charged with first-degree murder and failure to comply with his recognizance.
He was scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Saturday.Toronto police believe the shooting was targeted, and said there are no outstanding suspects. The homicide unit is handling the investigation.One witness told CBC News they saw a man following a woman who appeared to be in her 20s. The witness said the man spoke to her briefly before she turned around, after which he fired a single shot and fled the scene.There did not appear to be any argument before the shooting, and emergency services were immediately contacted after the woman collapsed. The witness said they also briefly tried to follow the suspect.
