The Uttarakhand government is planning to form a Sanskrit language committee to preserve, enrich and promote the use of the Sanskrit language in the state. It has invited suggestions from Sanskrit scholars, teachers, researchers, universities, gurukuls and enthusiasts across the country to participate in the panel via email by August 10.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Sanskrit has a special place in the heritage of Uttarakhand. He stressed the need to make language relevant. Sanskrit is not just a language but a cornerstone of India’s knowledge tradition and cultural heritage, Dhami said. “The state government is constantly striving to take it to the masses and give it a new identity that suits the times.”
Sanskrit Education Minister Deepak Kumar said the state of Uttarakhand took an important step in 2010 by granting Sanskrit the status of the second official language. He said Dhami stressed the need for a Sanskrit committee at an international Sanskrit conference in Haridwar in December 2025. The process of setting up the committee was taken forward at a meeting held on July 15.
The committee is expected to work for education and research in Sanskrit, preservation and digitization of ancient manuscripts, Indian knowledge traditions, Vedic and classical studies, officials said. It will focus on Sanskrit based skill development and employment opportunities.
It is envisaged that the committee will expand the use of Sanskrit in administrative and technical fields, and explore the potential of the language in artificial intelligence and digital media. The committee will formulate policies and action plans for the promotion and dissemination of Sanskrit language in Uttarakhand and beyond.
