A policeman was killed after terrorists opened fire in Anantnag town of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. The attack took place around 12.30 pm at Lal Chowk in Anantnag.

This is the first terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir since April 22, 2025, when 26 civilians were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack.
According to officials, Superintendent of Police Ashiq Hussain Qureshi (20 Belt), of 3rd IR Battalion and resident of Berwah in Budgam district, was deployed on security duty for Amarnath Yatra when he was attacked.
He was taken to Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where the treating doctors declared him dead. Further medical and legal procedures are being implemented in accordance with the protocol.
Security forces cordoned off the area and began a search operation to track down the attackers.
Reacting to the attack, CPI(M) Central Committee member and Kulgam MLA MY Tarigami condemned the killing, calling it a “heinous attack” that “led to the loss of precious lives”.
“These acts of violence are deeply reprehensible and must be unequivocally condemned,” Tarigami said in a post on X. “I express my deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the slain policeman in this hour of grief.”
