A 20-year-old woman was stabbed to death by a man, and the accused was found hanging from a tree in the same area hours later in a case of suspected murder-suicide in Nashik, Maharashtra, police said on Saturday.

According to police, the accused, 26-year-old Sahil Ashok Lavari, allegedly killed the victim, Vaishnavi Avary, near a temple in Indiranagar district late on Friday night before he died by suicide at a jogging track in the area in the early hours of the day.

An official said the alleged accused stabbed the woman and cut her throat with a knife, even as residents rushed to the scene when they heard her screams.

He added that the accused managed to escape, and the woman died instantly.

Later, around 3 am, the accused was found hanging from a tree on the jogging track in the area, the official said.

He said the victim was a student and was living as a paying guest in the area.

According to preliminary investigations, the victim and the accused met on Friday evening. The attack may have stemmed from a one-sided love affair.

He added that a murder case had been registered, and an investigation had been opened to determine the exact cause of the killing.
