Kiran Kaur was imprisoned for 3 years.
Vikram Dhigua’s mother has been jailed for helping hide the knife used to kill teenager Henry Nowak after she took the weapon from her son and hid it in their home in Southampton, the BBC reported.Kiran Kaur, 53, was sentenced to three years in prison at Southampton Crown Court after being found guilty of assisting an offender. Prosecutors said she removed the murder weapon after her son, Vikram Dhigoa, stabbed 18-year-old Henry Novak as he returned home after a night out on December 3 last year.Degoa was sentenced to life in prison in June and must serve at least 21 years after being found guilty of Henry’s murder.According to the prosecution, Degua handed the 21cm knife to his mother shortly after the attack. She took it home, where police later found it from his bedroom along with more than 20 ceremonial and other weapons during a search conducted seven days after the killing. While sentencing Kaur, Judge William Mosley KC said the responsible parent should have encouraged her son to face the consequences of his actions rather than helping him avoid arrest.
He told the court that placing the knife among other weapons helped hide its importance and was intended to prevent it from being linked to the murder. The case also prompted scrutiny of the police response to the stabbing. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police previously released body-worn camera footage, courtesy of Henry’s family, showing officers handcuffing the teenager as he lay seriously injured after Degois falsely claimed he acted in self-defence following a racially motivated attack. The footage showed Henry repeatedly telling officers that he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe before losing the ability to respond. An officer informed him that he was under arrest for assault while he was lying on the ground. Two Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police officers remain under investigation for possible serious misconduct over their actions at the scene.
