A 45-year-old man, accused in a 2020 sacrilege case and recently released on bail, was stabbed to death with a sharp weapon, Punjab Police said on Tuesday. They added that Mewa Singh was killed by an unknown assailant at his house in Ladpur Turan village near Mandi Gobindgarh at midnight.

Singh was at home with his family when the attacker allegedly scaled the boundary wall, entered the house and attacked him. He died of his wounds instantly.

The police added that after carrying out the attack, the attacker was able to flee the scene.

Earlier, initial reports indicated that Singh was beheaded during the attack.

Later, Deputy Inspector of Police (Amloh) Bikramjit Singh Ghuman said that the deceased sustained several deep injuries from a sharp weapon and was not decapitated.

According to police, all possible motives are being examined, including financial transactions and personal enmity.

Immediately upon receiving information about the accident, police officers arrived at the scene and began an investigation. A forensic team also visited the site to collect evidence.

The body was kept by the police and transferred to the Civil Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The police began a search for the accused and are investigating the motive behind the murder.

According to the police, Mewa Singh was an accused in the 2020 sacrilege incident that took place at a gurdwara in Ladpur Turan village.
