Legendary New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78.His family confirmed the news in a statement, describing his death as “sudden and unexpected.”

They also clarified that his death was not related to his previous battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Earlier this year, Neil announced he was cancer-free and looking forward to continuing his acting career.Over the course of a career spanning more than five decades, Neil has appeared in more than 150 film and television projects. While he became an international star with Jurassic Park (1993), his acclaimed films also include Sleeping Dogs, My Brilliant Career, Possession, Omen III: The Final Conflict, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.Away from Hollywood, Neil found his greatest happiness on his farm and vineyard in New Zealand.

Sam Neil preferred a quiet life away from fame

Despite international stardom, Neil has often said that he never chased celebrity status. Instead, he prefers to spend time at his home in Central Otago, home to the award-winning winery, Two Paddocks, and a large collection of farm animals. Many of his animals became internet favorites after Neil regularly featured them in humorous videos on social media, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The animals, from ducks and pigs to sheep and cattle, have been named after his friends and colleagues, including Michael Caine, Meryl Streep, Graham Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.Speaking to the Chicago Tribune in 1995, Neil spoke about his unconventional approach to fame.“I never had an image, fostered one or wanted one, which meant I had wonderful freedom to do whatever I pleased at the time.”

His family has largely remained out of the limelight

Neil was known for keeping his personal life private. He married Japanese make-up artist Noriko Watanabe in 1989 after they met while working on the film Dead Calm, which also starred Nicole Kidman.Watanabe has built a successful career in the film industry, working on acclaimed productions including Hacksaw Ridge, Silence and The Power of the Dog, while also working as a personal make-up artist to stars including Nicole Kidman and Liam Neeson. The couple split in 2017 after nearly three decades together. Before his marriage, Neil was in a long-term relationship with New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow, his co-star in Omen III. They welcomed a son together during their relationship.

Sam Neill was a father of four children

Neil has four children. His eldest son, Andrew, was put up for adoption when the actor was in his early 20s. The two reunited 25 years later after searching for each other.Speaking to The Times in 2014, Neil described their reunion as meaningful but far from the emotional scenes often depicted in films.“No one cries in anyone’s arms, it’s much more mature,” he said.Neil also shares son Tim with Lisa Harrow. With Watanabe, he had a daughter, Elena, and also adopted her daughter from a previous relationship, Maiko.Elena appeared briefly in acting projects before pursuing her career as a tattoo artist in Melbourne, Australia.

Both Elena and Maiko later became mothers, making Neil a proud grandfather.

His farm became his greatest passion

Although millions knew him as one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, Neil often said that his happiest moments were spent tending to his farm and producing wine. His winery, Two Paddocks, was founded in 1993 and has continued to gain international recognition.Speaking about his generosity, Neil once joked that he wanted people to respect his wines more than his celebrity status.“My wines have much more dimensions than I could ever aspire to.
