NEW DELHI: State-run oil marketing companies are considering expanding the use of 10 kg lightweight LPG cylinders beyond domestic consumers, with the cylinders likely to be sold at commercial LPG prices if approved. The move could benefit migrant workers, tenants, students, street vendors, cafes and food stalls that need LPG but lack space for larger 19kg commercial cylinders. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) based composite cylinders can be sold through gas agencies and selected retail outlets. The cylinders are already available on a limited scale to local users under different brand names: HPCL’s HP Gas Ojas, IndianOil’s Indane Xtralight and BPCL’s Bharatgas Lite.OMCs are currently marketing 19kg, 5kg and 2kg cylinders for commercial and consumer users without local LPG connections. Commercial LPG costs about 133% more than home cooking gas. In Delhi, a 14.2 kg domestic drum costs Rs 942, while a 19 kg commercial drum costs Rs 2,930. The price of a 5 kg cylinder is Rs 808.5.Manufactured using advanced composite technology, the 10kg cylinder is made of three layers and is approximately 50% lighter than a conventional steel LPG cylinder, making it easier to carry, transport and handle.Unlike steel cylinders, it is easy to carry to upper floors. Its transparent body allows consumers to check gas levels without a scale, making refilling easier, an oil company executive said.
