You are not the most polite man: A visa officer asks an Indian man why his company is sending him to New York on a business trip

The Redditor says a visa officer told him his answer seemed to be memorized before his B1/B12 visa was rejected.

An Indian man shared his recent B1/B2 visa rejection experience on Reddit where he asked for advice on how long he should wait before reapplying. But the details of the interview revealed the harshness of the interrogation he was subjected to by the visa officer, who did not believe why he was seeking a work visa for the United States.

The 27-year-old said this was his first visa application. He has been working at his company for four years and now his employer is sponsoring a short business trip to New York for an off-site review and business audit. The Redditor said the visa officer asked him twice about the purpose of his visit. “It’s a short business trip to attend off-site team meetings and review customer work,” the man repeated the same answer twice because he thought he wasn’t heard the first time.

The visa officer got annoyed as he repeated the answer and said, “I know it’s a short business trip, and it looks like you saved it.”The visa officer said to the applicant: “Why is your company sending you because you can’t explain it to me? You don’t seem like the most polite guy.” The Redditor said he then explained that he works directly with clients, attends business review meetings, etc.But he was eventually handed a 214(b) rejection letter.

Redditors commented that it was clear from the interview that the visa officer was not convinced about the purpose of his visit. They said that as soon as the visa officer said the answer appeared to be reserved, the game was over. “Maybe the ‘save votes’ comment from the officer is the real story here, more than just the ties or the paycheck. Once the officer says that out loud, he’s already decided that you’re reading a script rather than actually answering, and everything after that becomes damage control.”

Because reapplying the fix is not more preparation, but less, answer in your own words even if pausing and rephrasing sounds more authentic than a clean, rehearsed line. “Questions about connections and salaries are usually just standard follow-ups, and they don’t seem to have been the motivation here,” one wrote.Others pointed out that his answers were really bad, and in his Reddit post it even seemed like he was desperate to get into the US. The man said that one of his colleagues also gave the same response but his visa has been approved and he wants to visit the US because it will lead to more business and more rewards.
