Speculation surrounding the global distribution of director Nitish Tiwari’s upcoming epic ‘Ramayana’ has gained new momentum after India’s Consul General in Los Angeles, Dr KJ Srinivasa, addressed reports about the film during a talk at the Indian Film Festival in Los Angeles.The discussion emerged after digital creator Sabine Fahim shared a video of her interaction on social media. She wrote alongside the clip: “It’s time for Indian cinema to be respected around the world!” She also added, “This year we talked about the impact of Indian cinema. We also talked about the importance of American media in South Asia and how we can be the bridge towards better understanding and respect.”During the conversation, Dr. Srinivasa explained the growing international interest in Indian cinema and recalled the response to “Ramayana” at CinemaCon earlier this year.
“What we found is that there are already customers for Indian films, but there is a lack of education about what India stands for, and what India can do,” he said. “I think this is where we need the help of media outlets like you, to educate people on both sides of the continent’s borders.”
Indian films have always had a global impact and this is the right time to formalize our relationship with Hollywood.”
Speaking about the industry’s interest in ‘Ramayana’ during the event, he added: “At Cinema Con, I realized that this is something that attracts Hollywood producers to get the opportunity to meet people who have already come to learn how to promote Ramayana.
“There were people, producers, advertisers, but at the same time, there were people from all over the world and famous directors like James Cameron.”When asked specifically about rumors that Warner Bros. Pictures could distribute the Ramayana globally. “Not really, because you know they don’t want to…,” Dr. Srinivasa said.While there has been no official announcement from the filmmakers or Warner Bros.
Regarding the film’s international distribution, industry chatter has continued since “Ramayana” was a huge hit at CinemaCon, which also hosted several big-ticket films including “Avengers: Doomsday,” “The Odyssey” and “Dune: Part 3,” among many others.Ramayana starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama.
