First reactions to Christopher Nolan Odyssey They are in.
Here’s a sampling of comments about Nolan’s epic, which tells the story of Greek hero Odysseus’s (Matt Damon) long, torturous, and fantastical journey home after the Trojan War, returning to the kingdom of Ithaca to rescue his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). Odyssey It is the first film to be shot entirely in IMAX format, and the film is screened to critics in IMAX theaters, where available.
Universal handles first reactions a little differently Odyssey. Instead of dedicated “word of mouth” screenings that allow influencers and fan bloggers to first interact with the film on social media, professional journalists and others who saw the film at its London premiere and other press screenings will be included in the first wave of engagement (along with some influencers who participated in press events).
time out: “Dense but accessible, and filled with the best work of the career from a stacked cast — Samantha Morton is extraordinary — it’s a stunning blend of craft and spectacle that’s built to last. I’ve watched it twice, and I took away a lot of things both times: a chilling vision of brutalized men seeing themselves through women’s eyes, a study of leadership and a sweeping, old-school adventure tale. Even Giant got me through it. There’s even a few laughs, too. Go see.” “Twice.”
IndieWire: “The Odyssey: Surprisingly Normal (and Less Desperate)” Oppenheimer Following the story of a man haunted by the challenge of the gods and a doomed civilization – this one fights to avenge his arrogance. Obviously, IMAX is huge. Too heavy to be S-tier Nolan, but the final act rewards the ride.
diverse: “I’ve watched Christopher Nolan’s #TheOdyssey, and it’s an astonishing achievement. A triumphant, awe-inspiring epic. The performances of Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o are truly outstanding. And for some, truly, the best performances of their careers! … Christopher Nolan is a visionary, and #TheOdyssey is a work of art… The battle scenes, especially at Troy, are breathtaking. It’s an incredible epic.”
The Independent: “It’s Nolan’s biggest film to date. This film has three times as many set pieces as any of Nolan’s previous films, and each one of them is breathtaking in its own way. OdysseyNolan showcases optical illusions in a way you’ve never seen before. The only criticism I have, and it’s a good one, is… you’re often left wanting more from each set piece, and this certainly works your way up the rewatchability factor of the film. I also can’t quite remember there being a movie with such a stacked cast, where everyone is plugging away. Special shout out to Tom Holland in his best role yet with Telemachus and Himesh Patel…and Samantha Morton who steals the show well with the few scenes she appears in.
Hollywood Reporter Film Editor Aaron Koch: “I’ve seen his films in theaters ever since souvenirAfter 25 years, #TheOdyssey brings us its first offering: a full-fledged horror series directed by Christopher Nolan.
DigitalSpy: “The Odyssey is stunning. Filled with intense, stunning set pieces, often backed by a soul-shaking score, it builds to a final act as good as anything Nolan has done. Purists may balk at adaptation twists, but as an experience, no one does it like Nolan.”
Collider: “Christopher Nolan Odyssey *Unbelievable*. I’ve been lucky enough to watch it twice, and it gets better on the second viewing. I was really blown away by this movie. If you can, watch it in @IMAX 70mm. It is a jaw dropping experience. It’ll be great wherever you see it, but IMAX 70mm is the better choice.
Critic Eric Davis: “Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is an absolute triumph and the crowning cinematic achievement of one of the great directors of our time. The production design is incredible, the action is breathtaking, and the scale is unlike anything he’s done before. What really struck me was how much he embraced horror… Anne Hathaway is amazing, Matt Damon is excellent, and Tom Holland continues to prove that he can do just about anything. But Robert Pattinson absolutely steals the show for Look, It’s the Event A must watch movie this summer, and maybe this year, I can’t wait to watch it again.
Odyssey The film also includes the nymph Calypso (Charlize Theron) and Penelope’s weeping suitor Antinous (Robert Pattinson), who seeks to marry the queen and become ruler of Ithaca. The film also features Odysseus’ servant Eumaeus (John Leguizamo) and Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, the Greek king of Sparta.
Odyssey Lands is in theaters July 17. Latest trailer below.
