A viral video of Nupur Sanon, her husband Stepin Ben and his parents exiting a Mumbai restaurant recently sparked online speculation. In the clip, Stepien’s parents appeared to walk forward while Nupur waited at the back, leading some social media users to claim that her mother-in-law was ignoring her.
The video quickly sparked discussions, with many fans interpreting Nupur’s expression as disappointment. Now, Stepien has addressed the incident and explained what really happened.Speaking to Galatta India, Stepien said that there was no awkwardness between his parents and Nupur, adding that his parents simply do not feel comfortable facing the cameras.“My parents are very simple people. When they see the media, they quietly stay away from it because they feel the media is there for me, not for them.
They think this is your profession. “People want to see you, not us.”“My parents didn’t know the media was standing there,” he said, recalling the moment captured in the now-viral clip. “The moment they saw the flashlights, they just started walking forward. I told them: ‘It’s okay, go ahead, we’ll come behind.’ Nupur tried to stop them, but they didn’t even realize that someone was calling them. They just thought, ‘Media hai, chalo nikalte hain’.
Stepien said the narrative that his mother deliberately ignored Nupur was far from the truth.“People say Nupur has a dangerous mother-in-law, but it’s quite the opposite. If you meet my parents, you will understand that they are the most simple people. Their whole life revolves around their children.”He revealed that his parents were originally planning to spend their retirement in Kerala but changed their plans because their children wanted to be closer to them.“My parents wanted to retire and settle in Kerala because they loved the farms and the quiet life there. But they decided to stay with us because we insisted. Their lives revolve around their children.”
“Saas bahu is always on the same team”
Stepien laughed off the online chatter surrounding his family dynamics and said Nupur has a warm relationship with his mother.“If Indians want to know what the relationship between my mother and Nupur is like, here is the answer – when we play games at home, my mother and Nupur are always on the same team.
My father and I are on the other side. That’s the kind of bond they share.”
“We were friends long before we got married.”
Opening up about his relationship with Nupur, Stepien said that their romance grew naturally after years of friendship.“I have known Nupur’s family since 2020. During the lockdown, neither of us had many friends, so our families spent a lot of time together.”He added that Kriti Sanon became like family long before he married Nupur.“Kriti has always been like a sister and friend to me. I have always shared a great bond with her and her parents.
We would go out to dinner, travel together, and spend time as a family.”Reflecting on their relationship, he said, “Our friendship lasted for years before it finally turned into marriage. Even today, Nupur and I are best friends.”
On questions of marriage and what’s next
Stepien admitted that before his wedding, he was constantly asked when he was going to settle down.“Before, everyone kept asking: When are you getting married?” Now those questions have stopped.
“It’s good because people can finally talk about my music and career instead.”The singer also said that he has only achieved “five percent” of what he dreams of achieving.“Out of 100, I feel like I only achieved five. This year I have planned everything very aggressively. I want to release a lot of songs, give people more music, more content, more movie songs and more collaborations.”He revealed that he already has several projects, including film tracks.“I recently released the song Tera Ho Jaaun with Varun Dhawan and the title song of Salman Khan’s upcoming film Matrubhoomi is also in my voice. There are many singles and collaborations coming up. The more hits I have, the more international collaborations I will announce.”
