Colombia secured top spot in Group K at the 2026 World Cup after defeating Portugal in a thrilling 0-0 draw at Miami in Florida, with the result sending both countries safely into the round of 32 with the South Americans confirmed as winners of the group.

It is worth noting that this match was Colombia’s first ever goalless draw (0-0) in the history of the FIFA World Cup.Although neither side was able to achieve a breakthrough, the competition was not cautious at all. Colombia dominated the attacking play throughout the evening, relentlessly testing Portugal’s defense and forcing goalkeeper Diogo Costa into a series of brilliant saves, while Cristiano Ronaldo had a disappointing night after his record performance against Uzbekistan.

With this draw, Colombia maintained its unbeaten record in the group stage with seven points from two wins and a draw, while Portugal qualified as runner-up with five points after one win and two draws.

Colombia dictates procedures but Portugal bears relentless pressure

The risks were clear before kick-off. Colombia entered the final match of Group K with six points after wins over Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, needing only a draw to secure first place. Portugal, which has four points after drawing with the Democratic Republic of the Congo before beating Uzbekistan 5-0, needed a win to surpass coach Nestor Lorenzo’s team and top the group.

Backed by a raucous, overwhelmingly pro-Colombian crowd inside Miami Stadium, Los Cafeteros immediately imposed themselves on the competition. Their aggressive pressing repeatedly disrupted Portugal’s attempts to build from the back, while quick switches into wide areas made Roberto Martinez’s defense tougher throughout the first half.

The numbers reflect Colombia’s early dominance. They had an expected goals figure of 0.58 compared to Portugal’s 0.06 over the first 36 minutes, as they frequently got into dangerous positions and registered 23 touches inside Portugal’s penalty area, while Portugal managed just nine at the other end.John Arias scored Colombia’s first big chance when his powerful shot forced Diogo Costa into a brilliant save, laying the foundation for what would become a brilliant goalkeeping display. Portugal had difficulty creating sustained attacking pressure, although Bruno Fernandes almost punished Colombia against the run of play with a shot from close range that Camilo Vargas responded sharply and shot around the post.

The match was briefly halted in the 30th minute when the Video Assistant Referee reviewed a possible penalty kick for Portugal, but after a long examination the referee rejected the appeals and play resumed without incident.

Ronaldo’s difficult evening contrasts with Costa’s heroics

After becoming the first footballer in history to score in six different FIFA World Cups, Cristiano Ronaldo once again led Portugal’s attack but found himself increasingly isolated against the dominant central defensive partnership of Davinson Sanchez and John Lucome. The Portugal captain had only one shot on target, but it failed to test Vargas, as Colombia managed to deny him any meaningful serves for most of the evening. However, it was Ronaldo who came closest to producing the decisive moment on the night. Midway through the game, he brought back the years with a stunning attempted bicycle kick after a dramatic pass into the box. Ronaldo timed his jump perfectly, communicating clearly with the acrobatic effort, but Santiago Arias bravely threw himself into the path of the strike, saving what would have become one of the most memorable goals of the tournament.

Earlier, in the 20th minute, Ronaldo showed his trademark intelligence with a clever blind flick on the edge of the area that launched Bruno Fernandes into space, but Lucumi recovered brilliantly to make a timely interception before the midfielder could pull the trigger.Portugal came close to scoring again later in the second half when Ronaldo received an assist from Joao Felix, sent it from just outside the penalty area, and shot the ball just past the goal.

It was a difficult moment, as Ronaldo moved too early and was slightly offside, meaning even just finishing on target wouldn’t have counted.

This sequence was emblematic of Joao Felix’s influence throughout the match, as he orchestrated numerous attacking moves and consistently created chances for both Ronaldo and Portugal’s attacking line in what was one of his most complete and creative displays of the tournament.

While Ronaldo struggled to influence the game in the final third, Diogo Costa proved indispensable at the other end. The Portuguese goalkeeper made six saves during the evening, twice as many as Vargas, repeatedly frustrating Colombia as wave after wave of attacks arrived.

His performance eventually preserved the draw and earned him widespread recognition as the standout individual display of the match.

James gets things going while Columbia’s pressure goes to no avail

If Portugal relied on Costa, Colombia’s rhythm flowed almost entirely through James Rodriguez.Working between midfield and attack, the experienced playmaker controlled the ball aggressively, constantly finding spaces behind Portugal’s midfield and frequently opening up the defense with incisive passes. His best contribution came in the 62nd minute when he sent a neat pass into the path of Richard Reus, whose first-time shot deflected agonizingly wide of the far post after an excellent overlapping run.

James left the field to warm applause in the 75th minute after another quiet display, having once again dictated the pace of Colombia’s attacking football.Luis Diaz remained a constant threat throughout the entire 90 minutes. The winger isolated Joao Cancelo repeatedly before later testing substitute Diogo Dalot, adding to the shape of Portugal’s defense with his pace and direct running. Although he has only registered one attempt on target, much of Colombia’s impressive attacking size stems from his ability to pin Portugal’s full-backs deep and create space for runners arriving in the middle.

By the end of the match, Colombia had attempted 26 shots compared to Portugal’s 13, while six of those shots forced Costa into just two saves from Vargas. Colombia also won five corner kicks compared to Portugal’s two, and completed 480 of 525 passes with an astonishing 91 percent accuracy, and retained 55 percent despite Portugal’s superiority in passing accuracy with 93 percent of 394 completed passes.

The heartbreak of the VAR sealed Colombia’s victory in the group before the knockout paths were confirmed

Colombia’s biggest disappointment arrived in stoppage time.In the second minute of stoppage time, Davinson Sanchez rose high inside the box to head home past Costa, sparking a celebration from the stadium as players and fans thought they had found a dramatic winner.

Instead, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review silenced the Colombian fans before disallowing the goal for offside, continuing the stalemate until the final whistle.

Portugal still created one last chance from a free kick executed by Bruno Fernandes in the final minutes. Ronaldo attacked the cross aggressively, drawing both Lucumi and Davinson Sanchez towards him with his aerial movement, creating space behind the defensive line for his oncoming teammates. However, the cross narrowly went over his head, and Portugal’s supporting runners were unable to capitalize. The match ended with Colombia possessing 55% of the ball, 26 shots compared to 13 for Portugal, and twice the number of shots on goal, while both teams maintained a wonderful quality of passes despite the intense power.

Colombia committed 11 fouls compared to Portugal’s six, which reflects the physical but controlled nature of the match.

The draw was enough to confirm Colombia’s lead in Group K with seven points and a goal difference of +3, while Portugal ranked second with five points and a total goal difference of +5. The Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked third with three points, leaving its hopes hanging on the ranking of the third-placed teams, while Uzbekistan finished last with one point.Colombia’s reward for topping the group is a round-of-32 meeting with Ghana at Vancouver’s BC Place on July 2, a road that also takes them away from several tournament favorites in the direct knockout stages. Meanwhile, Portugal face a tougher task after finishing second, which will lead to a European-heavy clash with Group L leaders Croatia at MetLife Stadium on July 3, with the winner potentially qualifying to face France should the French side advance from the round of 32.
